The Marcellus Shale is the largest natural gas formation in the United States. The shale encompasses 104,000 square miles and stretches across West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Ohio, New York and several other states. By using hydraulic fracturing to allow the gas to flow to the well bore, the gas that is trapped in the shale can be recovered. The increase in drilling activity in the Marcellus Shale has generated great economic benefits for many people, and also many states. Estimates of how much recoverable gas there is in the Marcellus by the US Energy Information Administration in 2012 point towards 141 Trillion Cubic Feet. Gas from the Marcellus has lowered the price of natural gas in the Mid Atlantic States which has led to more money in the pockets of the citizens due to lower gas bills.
