The YMCA of Northwest Louisiana has received a massive donation from BHP Billiton. The international energy giant donated $10.7 million to the organization, enough to cover about half the cost of a new facility planned for construction next to BHP headquarters in Shreveport, Louisiana. An article by Adam Duvernay for the Monroe News Star reports:
“Corporations have been very good to local nonprofits, but I don’t think there’s ever been a gift this large,” said YMCA executive director Gary Lash. “It gives us a great amount of credibility and confidence this facility will get built.”
For the nonprofit organization, $10,000-20,000 is typically considered a hefty donation, and Lash has seen donations of $100,000 and $250,000 during his time with the organization, but never anything nearly as large as $10.7 million. The immense donation to the YMCA of Northwest Louisiana is among one of the largest donations in the state.
