HERNANDO, Miss. — Officials say an expansion of a natural gas service will bring the power option to customers living in five northern Mississippi counties where it wasn’t previously available.
The Commercial Appeal reports Public Service Commissioner Brandon Presley made the announcement Wednesday along with Atmos Energy and other officials.
Counties where service will expand include DeSoto, Clay, Lee, Monroe and Webster.
Presley says bringing natural gas to unserved areas in the state gives residents choices for heating and chances to save money.
The service expansion is part of an Atmos program approved by the PSC designed to expand natural gas service into unserved areas by loosening restrictions and, in some cases, waiving construction costs.
Providing utilities in rural areas where it isn’t cost-effective has been a challenge for utility regulators nationwide.
