Solar farm planned for northeastern NY; Whiteface to benefit

CHAMPLAIN, N.Y. (AP) — Developers plan to break ground on a solar farm in northeastern New York within the next three months.

Borrego Solar will lease the land and own, operate and maintain the farm just south of the Canadian border. When completed, it will feed solar power into the local grid as part of a power purchase agreement between Borrego Solar and the Olympic Regional Development Authority.

The company is permitted for 28 acres. The first stage will be a 2.8 megawatt system.

Gore Mountain General Manager Mike Pratt tells the Plattsburgh Press-Republican that Whiteface Mountain will have about 40 percent of its electric needs generated from the agreement.

The project is part of an environmental initiative undertaken by New York state and ORDA, which also oversees Gore and Belleayre mountain resorts.
