West Virginia coal miner dies from injuries in ignition

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — West Virginia officials say a coal miner has died from injuries during an accident last week.

The state Office of Miners’ Health, Safety and Training says Donald Workman died Thursday evening of injuries sustained in a July 29 accident at Road Fork #51 Spartan Mine in Pineville.

The Gilbert resident was 58 years old.

Officials say Workman was a maintenance supervisor and was on the surface during an ignition in the shaft of the underground mine.

State inspectors are further investigating the incident and the cause of the ignition.
